UNIQUE WELLNESS PLASTIC BACKED ADULT BRIEFS FULL REVIEW

Well, to say this diaper is “out of this world” may sound pretty corny, but being that it’s based on NASA “Maximum Absorbency Garment” (MAG), I guess it would be OK to say that!  As you can see from the table above, this is a PHENOMINAL product!  I am half way through my first bag of them and no matter what I do, there have been NO leaks at all.  SO, here’s the review.

SIZING

The Unique Wellness Diaper comes in three sizes:

    •Medium 24” to 36” waist or hip

    •Large 36” to 46” waist or hip

•X-Large Up to a 67” waist or hip

The fit of this diaper is VERY different, as you may have noticed from the list above.  They actually fit a little bigger than the measurements listed, unless you have HUGE thighs.  The leg openings are large and allow them to fit larger legs.  When you look to order these, you will definitely want to order the sample pack with the two sizes closed to you...for instance if you think you are a large, order the sample pack with the Small/Medium and the Large in the pack.  I have a 39” waist and 40” hips or so and I can comfortably wear the small/medium even though the written measurements say they would be too small.  I can also comfortably wear the large size, although they come up higher in the back and front.  It’s really a personal preference thing, so give a sample (or better yet, order a bag of them) a try.  I hope this makes sense.  Regardless, with the strong tapes, you can make them fit just about any measurements.

One thing I have to say about this product is the packaging is amazing!  All the hard work this company has put into a quality diaper translates to the bag design as well.  Normally, we don’t mention packaging, but the bags that this product comes in are almost a work of art!  The bag is very informative when it comes to how the brief was devised (based on NASA technology) and how to properly use the product.  I was pretty blown away when I first saw the bag.  A far cry from the clear poly bags of the past that just had a sticker on them with the brand name!

CONSTRUCTION

The Unique Wellness diaper has a colored plastic outer backing, elastic  leg bands, standing inner leak barriers, no elastic at the waist (which is really not needed with this diaper and VERY strong refastenable tapes on each side. We're going to cover each feature one by one here:

Plastic Backing

The plastic backing on this product is fairly strong! I can fasten the tapes almost to the point of cutting off circulation, and the backing does not stretch or tear. Now, I’m not going to lie, the plastic backing on this diaper is quite noisy.  If you are wearing this diaper under thinner dress pants, you may want to wear a pair of underwear or other close fitting garment over them to stop the noise.  The reason the plastic backing strength gets an "Average" rating, is if you are a very active user, over time, microscopic pinholes will form in the plastic that wetness weeps through.  That said, if  you are a wheelchair user or bedridden, this does NOT seem to happen at all.

Elastic Leg Bands

Those of you who know me know I think elastic waists are an extra cost gimmick that is not really necessary. So, I am VERY happy with the Unique Wellness diaper, as they did not go to the extra expense (thus passing it on to us) to put a useless feature on their diaper.  There is no elastic waistband and that’s the way it should be.  No good diaper needs it just to make you “feel secure”, because you ARE secure even without it.  The elastic at the legs is wide enough to work well and be comfortable but not so wide as to get in the way. It is very effective.

Standing Inner Leak Barriers

The standing inner leak barriers on this product, while not as tall as on some other products, are VERY effective!  They run the full length of the crotch and half way up the front of the product and a little over half way up the back of the product, which is great for bowel incontinence containment. There is no need to “stand them up” when you open the diaper to put it on.  They stand on their own and go right into place where they’re needed.  The material that they’re made of seems to repel liquid better than any other brand I’ve tried, which must be part of the reason these diapers DO NOT LEAK.  Being that I do have problems with bowel accidents from time to time, I am thoroughly convinced that the standing inner leak barriers will NOT leak in that instance either.  This is a very secure feeling product.

Padding Size, Shape and Thickness

OK, you need to READ this section farther than just the first part or you will miss out.  The padding on this product when I initially saw it was much narrower than I felt comfortable with.  It does NOT extend out into the wings in the front or the back, so needless to say, I was very skeptical at first, even refusing to try the product at night for the first few days I had it as I am a side sleeper and was sure it would leak.  Huh, boy, was I wrong!  The padding seems to go only about a half inch to an inch to the outside of each standing inner leak barrier.  This leads to an awesome trim fit, as the padding is about half the thickness of the Dry 24/7 I reviewed.  This product seems to buck the idea that “thick padding is needed for absorbency” because it absorbs FAST, and I mean FAST!  I can lay on my side all night and not leak!  The padding in this daiper seems to wick wetness very fast.  In fact, I have had the padding get SO saturated that it leaked out the top of the waist before it ever leaked out of the legs, and ALL of the padding was soaked...all the way up to the waistbands.  The padding wicks moisture even better than the Molicare Super Plus, which was the previous hands down champ.  VERY nice guys!  It will take repeated wettings without a problem.

Dual Layer Refastenable Tape Tabs

This diaper is the only one I have EVER given a “good” on ease of putting it on and ease of removal.  Why?  Because the tapes on this diaper are HUGE (probably 2 times bigger than the usual brands), which means they are easy to grasp and hold onto, and they are STRONG!  The tape consists of the usual blue bottom tape that sticks to the diaper surface and then the white top tape that you unfasten and refasten.  Once the blue tape is stuck you can unfasten and refasten the white top tape over and over without ripping the diaper or having any problems.  The blue tape stays behind on the diaper so you know where to refasten the tape for the best fit.

QUALITY

I have found the quality of this product to be outstanding, if you are a relatively inactive/immobile user.  I have not found one tape loose and stuck to the other part of the diaper, I have not had one issue with the cut, padding thickness, polymer placement or padding shape that I have seen with a number of other brands.  The plastic backing however, could be of better quality so that those of us who are extremely active don't run into the microscopic pinhole issue.  I have seen complaints that the diaper padding clumps up and falls down in the crotch, but I have to disagree.  I use long braces to walk and they lock at the knees so I can walk.  If you’re going to have padding do this, this is when it will.  It never has yet, no matter how wet the diaper has been.

APPEARANCE

Here’s where this product does slide a little in my rating.  For some odd reason, they choose to use colored plastic backing rather than an all white backing.  The small/medium diaper is a light blue and the large diaper is a mint green color.  As of the writing of this, I am unsure of the x-large color...I certainly hope it’s not pink!  Now, to be fair to them, they do market to hospitals and nursing homes.  In these facilities, the staff needs to be able to easily tell the size of the diaper, and since these do not have any writing on the outside of the diaper that says “medium” or “large”, the next best thing to do is color code the sizes.  Still, I think I would have preferred it in all white with medium or large written on it.

COMFORT

I have to give this diaper a “perfect 10” in the comfort department!  The fit is cut such that, even if you tape them SUPER tight, they are not uncomfortable.  When taped a normal tightness, they do not feel like they are falling down but feel “loose and comfortable” is the only way I can describe it.  I guess what wearing a pair of boxers might feel like.  Just suffice it to say they are incredibly comfortable.  Even when wet, they do not FEEL wet or clammy.  The inner lining really does keep wetness away from your skin!  I have had no skin redness or dampness when I change with these even when the diaper is saturated.  Not sure what the difference in their lining is, but it is a very notable difference.  So, if your skin is sensitive to urine wetness, this is the product you want to go with, trust me on that one.

VALUE FOR THE PRICE

Like most other brands of premium adult diapers (Molicare, Abena, etc...) these are a bit on the pricey side at $1.33 per diaper at www.wellnessbriefs.com.  DO NOT let the price scare you. The company says you will only need three (3) in a 24 hour period, and frankly, I have to agree!  So, for $3.99 per day, you get awesome protection!  They say you can go as long as 12 hours in one diaper, and even though I am NOT a fan of that and don’t do that myself, I believe them.  I have worn one for 12 hours to see, and you know what?  They held the whole 12 hours!  I urge you to give them a try!
